We humans are increasingly seeking a closer connection to nature. Spending time outdoors among forests and fields has been shown to have positive effects on both physical and mental health. Not least because we move around, but also because it positively affects our stress levels – something many have now started to prioritize and appreciate. Perhaps it’s not so surprising that cooking over an open fire has quickly become a growing trend. Preparing a meal outdoors is no longer just for those competing in outdoor cooking championships – it has now become an activity for the average person.
The Right of Public Access gives us the opportunity to discover many beautiful places, and there is a wide range of meadows, grassy patches, forests, and lakesides that can be just around the corner, ready for us to enjoy. But what should you consider if you want to take the step to outdoor cooking in these places? We have gathered the best tips below, along with the recipe for one of our super simple favorites when it comes to what dish to prepare!
Outdoor cooking – here is the equipment you need
Step one is, of course, to make sure you have the right equipment for the task, and trust us, it doesn’t take much for your meal to be a hit! A BBQ carving set or grill tools such as grill tongs and grill spatula will get you very far. For those who want to keep it simple, the classic grilled sausage with bread or a juicy hamburger with toppings is always a safe bet, and then nothing more than this is needed, along with a campfire. Read more here on how to succeed with a perfect smashed burger – every time. One tip, however, is to bring some kind of fire starter, matches, and a knife to make the process of getting the fire going easier.

Don’t forget that the flavor from smoke, fire, and embers can be a real flavor enhancer; for those who want to do something a bit more advanced, you can of course take advantage of this. Another tip is to prepare as much as possible at home beforehand to make it easier when you’re on site. Chop, boil, marinate, and cut up everything you can, then place it in containers or bags to bring along. Also, be sure to pack one or two bags for trash and washing up so the nature stays clean and beautiful. Then you can let your imagination run wild. Take out your grill tools, put on skewers with, for example, vegetables or game directly on the embers, let the fish get some extra flavor from the smoke, and cook the potatoes directly on the bed of coals with the skin on to get a charred surface but with an inside ready to eat.

The luxury of this meal is that you can, of course, throw in exactly whatever you want!
