Which potato should you use for mashed potatoes? It's the eternal question. The answer is that both waxy and starchy potatoes work well, but if you want to impress your guests, starchy potatoes are a safer choice. They become wonderfully fluffy - just how you want mashed potatoes to be!
How much mashed potatoes per person?
A trick when planning the amount of potatoes for your guests is to aim for about 225-250 grams per person. You might think that sounds like a lot, but since mashed potatoes, unlike boiled, look so fluffy and generous on the plate, it always feels like there is more than there actually is.
Simple mashed potatoes
Mashed potatoes are a classic recipe and perhaps the world's simplest way to make regular boiled potatoes a bit more festive. Here is everything you need to do:
- Peel the potatoes and boil for about 20 minutes, or until they are soft.
- Drain the water and press the potatoes through the potato ricer into a bowl.
- Optionally season with salt and white pepper and taste without stirring.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Tips! If you use leftover boiled potatoes, heat them gently in the microwave or in a pot with a little water before mashing them. Warm potatoes are both easier to mash and much tastier!
