How do you open wine without a corkscrew?
Are you in the middle of a move and struggling to find your way among all the moving boxes, or are you traveling, perhaps in a hotel room without kitchen equipment? Suddenly, you find yourself holding a bottle of wine, with no corkscrew in sight, and you feel despair growing. But there is still hope, because there are actually a few tricks for how you can manage. Here are 5 tricks to open your wine bottle without a corkscrew or any other type of wine opener!
1. Push the cork down into the bottle
As long as the cork is not broken and you don't mind the cork taste, you always have the option to push the cork down into the bottle, but keep in mind that it cannot be removed later. Place the bottle on a stable surface and press down on the cork with both hands. Use any tool you can find, such as a brush or similar, to help push the cork down more easily. Watch out for the splash when the cork releases!
2. Shoe technology
This technique is risky, both for the bottle and yourself. But it can be well worth a try if the occasion calls for it! Place the bottle bottom in the heel of a shoe with a sturdy rubber sole and bang the shoe against the wall. Keep banging until the cork is sufficiently pushed out so that you can pull out the rest yourself!
3. Open the wine bottle with a screw or key
If you have a screw available, you can try screwing the screw into the cork and then pulling it out. Here you can use a hammer or fork if possible. If you don't have a screw but have access to a key instead - try pressing the key down and then twisting and pulling upwards.
4. Open the wine bottle with a hanger
If you have a hanger on hand, you can try unscrewing the hook from the hanger and then screwing it into the cork of the bottle. Then use the hook to pull upwards.
5. Use fire to open the wine bottle
This method is recommended if you are going to open a wine bottle where the cork is broken. Take out a lighter of some kind and simply hold it against the neck of the bottle. Hopefully, the heat will cause the cork to pop due to the air pressure. Watch out for the cork when it flies!
As you may notice, it is not entirely easy to open a wine bottle without some form of opener, so do yourself a favor and invest in a bottle opener. Check out Dorres range of flask- and wine openers in all possible varieties here!
